PHP vs. IOP vs. Outpatient: Which Level of Care Fits?

Partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and outpatient treatment explained in plain language, so you know what to expect when you reach out.

When you start looking into treatment for substance use or mental health, the terms can feel like alphabet soup: PHP, IOP, OP. They describe how much structure and support a program gives you each week. Knowing the difference can make that first call a lot less confusing.

Here’s a plain-language guide to the three levels of care we offer at Resolve Wellness in Columbus.

Partial Hospitalization (PHP): the most structure

A Partial Hospitalization Program is for people who need more support than traditional outpatient therapy, but don’t need 24-hour supervision in a hospital.

  • You attend treatment during the day, several days a week.
  • In the evenings, you go home or to a supportive living environment.
  • Care comes from a team of mental health professionals working together.

PHP is often a good starting point when things feel unstable, or when someone needs help getting through a crisis safely. The goal is to stabilize, build coping skills and then step down to a lower level of care.

Intensive Outpatient (IOP): steady structure

Our Intensive Outpatient Program offers more support than weekly therapy, with less intensity than PHP.

  • Sessions are typically several days a week, usually for a few hours each day.
  • Treatment includes individual counseling, group therapy, family therapy, psychoeducation and relapse prevention.
  • You live at home and keep up with daily life.

Work is an important part of recovery in our IOP. Clients in IOP are required to have and keep a job, and our job assistance team can help if you need one.

Outpatient: the most flexibility

Outpatient treatment is flexible and non-residential. It’s a good fit for people who don’t need the structure of PHP or IOP, but still want professional support.

Many people move into outpatient care after finishing PHP or IOP, so the support continues as life gets back to normal.

How do you know which one is right?

You don’t have to figure that out on your own. The right level of care depends on things like your current substance use, your mental health, your safety, your support at home and whether you need detox or medication.

That’s exactly what our first conversation is for. We’ll ask a few questions, listen, and help you find the right place to start. Many people begin at one level and step down as they get stronger.
